The Reign of King Uther

No year goes by without fighting, death, and loss of property. Peasants brawl and are fined and break arms again. Priests smite with sharp words and curses, and take up cudgels to fi ght strangers. Bishops crush foes with excommunication and popes with interdict. Knights kill with lance, sword, mace, spear and fist. Strangers are enemies until proven otherwise. “Sword Age, Spear Age, Axe Age, Death,” is the life of a nobleman. Praise these knights: the selfless defenders of both commons and church, revered because they face deadly enemies to shield the weak, simply for a good meal, Glory, and death by the sword. ~ Bishop Dubricus in Noble Blessings Upon the Britons
